Anyway to recover corrupted files?
I was on my way to a meeting, saved and shutdown. When I opened back up at my meeting, the file said, "either corrupt or created in an earlier version of storyline. Any ideas on how I can open. My last back up was 3 days ago, and I'm losing a ton of work if I can't open this somehow.

So glad that Leslie's solution saved the day for you, Mallory! Only happy tears allowed here ☺️
I also wanted to pop in here and share these tips for reducing your risk of file corruption so you hopefully won't have to deal with that kind of panic again!

Leslie you saved me! Thanks a million!
Hi David,
Storyline saves a version in the temp folder if you've enabled the auto recovery, and the frequency of that back up is something you can control from the Storyline options. The default is 10 minutes:
The files will use the auto recovery method if Storyline crashes, but lots of folks have had success finding an earlier version of a corrupt file in the Temp folder as well.

Hi guys, I know this is a bit old, but I'm jumping on to this thread. I am sitting with the exact same problem/error, no luck. I've tried all of the above options - nothing. My settings are for every 10min autosave, however nothing saved. I lost weeks and weeks of work. Is there any other solution or can I perhaps send it to the developers? Our IT team has looked in every folder, nothing.
I am desperate!!
Hi Izette. I'm so sorry you're feeling desperate. Just to confirm, you checked out these steps already:
- Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline
- Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.
- Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.
- Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.
I would also recommend making a copy of the file and renaming it in File Explorer; then try to open the copy. And try Phil's suggestion to import the slides into a new project.
Fingers crossed for you!

Hi Crystal, yes to confirm I have tried all of the steps listed. My folder had all my other projects in Windows Explorer.
I have renamed and copied - no luck.
I have now made peace with it and will start all over.
Thank you !

If it is weeks of work do you have a back up? I backup every 30 minutes for this very reason.
Have you tried windows version control, this may have a backup?
IT maybe you can import something from the slides.

Hi Crystal, I encountered the same issue as lzette and others. While I Save regularly this is not enough. My PC crash (as a result of Replay) corrupted the new save yet open story file.
I tried locating your reference "Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline" but could not find it. I am using Windows 7. Can you help me find where you are referencing?
