Recovering Invalid or Corrupt

I found some older threads, but thought would post again since what I found was from 11 years ago.  Does anyone have experience opening 'Invalid or Corrupt' .story files?  I have tried all of the avenues to attempt to recover it (saving as new title, looking for 'previous versions', creating a new file and importing old file, etc.).  Is there anything else I can try?

  • I have exhaustively searched my harddrives for .tmp files. I can only find storyline files from 9/5 and later. I work in Storyline everyday. Did Articulate turn off saving tmp files? Did the application become corrupted and stop saving tmp files? I am getting a very bad feeling about the typical answer I am going to get from Articulate. So many application failures.

  • Kati,

I think a lot of it depends on the age of the files and how corrupt they are. I have had good luck saving to a new file name, but most of mine are within 2 to 3 months old. If you have an extra old computer, you might try installing an old version of Articulate and then try opening them.

Good luck, maybe a staff member may help. May be try submitting a help request. I think I was able to send one to Articulate and they recovered it for me.

  • Hello Kati,

Our support team can help check if your corrupted project files can still be recovered. If the file as a whole is beyond recovering, we can also check if we can recover any of the media or slides in the file.

Please share your project files here or in private by opening a support case so we can we can attempt to recover them. We'll delete it when we're done testing!

      Hi Kati,

I'm sorry but the project file that you shared can no longer be recovered. However, there may still be a working version of your project in your temp files. Here's how to check:

      1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

      2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.

      3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

      4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

Please follow the tips shared in this article to reduce the chances of encountering file corruption in your other project files.

  • I have a .story file that became corrupted this morning because I updated some Text-to-Speech. The file now crashes, even when I click the home tab. I have looked in %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline, but I only find files from 2 months ago.

Is there another location the backup files would be saved? I really need to get a Storyline file that is not corrupted.

This course has 100+ slides and the man hours being lost now is not good. My customer is also not too happy with the halt in development.

  • Mystery solved. The audio is not disappearing. The icon is moving ontop of another audio icon. When you have 30 elements on a slide, it is difficult to see this small change.
Still not sure why this would cause the application to crash so violently.
