Buttons with text and alt text

Hi, I have a simple question that I can't seem to find a simple answer to. 

I have a bunch of buttons.  They are just plain colored buttons with text in them.

1.  If I leave alt text blank, is the screen reader going to read i.e. "Button 1 [text]" or just "[text]"?

2. Alternately, if I add alt text, is the reader still going to announce that it's a button, or just read "[alt text]".

I will have to hand this off to someone else to test, so would like to get it right the first time.

    Hi Lara, a screen reader will identify the element type, for example "button", followed by the buttons label "button, Next" for example. The ALT text will default to the text within the button, provided the text is not an image. If using images as buttons, you will need to ensure the ALT text is defined.
