Disabling and re-enabling the Next button and the Previous button

I am working in Storyline2 and am having a problem with the Next and Previous buttons. We generally disable the buttons while the slide plays and then re-enable them when the content has played.

On some slides the re-enable just doesn't work. I checked to make sure that all of the boxes were checked for "normal state".

I have deleted the triggers and recreated them... a couple of times.

Nothing seems to be working. It is like, if there are too many items on the slide, the system can't handle re-enabling them all. (In some cases there are almost 20 items on the slide like text boxes, images,  highlight shapes, etc.)

Is there a maximum amount of items that S2 can handle with disabling and enabling the Next and Previous buttons?

I am frustrated because in a slide deck of almost 30 slides, there are only two or three that just refuse to play nice!

Any ideas or work-arounds would be much appreciated.

  • Hi Sandra!

Tell me more about the triggers you're using to disable and enable to Prev and Next buttons. At first glance, it sounds like you would use these two triggers:

    • Change state of Next button to Disabled when timeline starts on this slide.
    • Change state of Next button to Normal when timeline ends on this slide.

However, it sounds like you're using a different set of triggers to achieve this.

With your permission, I'd like to take a look at a sample slide to get a closer look at your triggers and help you simplify them. I'll delete from my machine it when I'm done troubleshooting. If you'd prefer to keep the file private, please share with me directly by uploading it here.

  • Thanks for sending over your file, Sandra! I recorded a quick video tutorial and emailed it to you within your case. I hope it's helpful!

What if using an embedded YouTube video? How can I disable the Next button after they click the play button on that object

  • Embed the video in a slide that you lightbox. The lightbox pauses the base timeline, disabling the Next button. Close the lightbox when its timeline reaches the length of the video. Put the close trigger on the slide with the video.
