Donwload Pdf from Storyline

Hi there!

I need to know how I can download PDF from storyline. I don´t want to add pdfs as resources. I need learners to be able to click a button and download a PDF file from the slide, i've used the trigger "open when..." but whenever I publish the SCORM I  get an error message when they click on the link.

I´m sure I´m missing a step before publishing SCORM and it could be a problem related to where pdfs are located at my computer.

Could you help me? Thanks :)

  • Out of curiosity, do you get the same error message if you were to add this document to the resources section in the player?  Storyline stores these files in the same folder when published.

  • A PDF is a computer file that is physically located on a computer somewhere. If your learners are going to download it. It must be someplace they can access.

If you will include it in the resources, Storyline will package it as part of the published output, and anybody that can access the course can download it. If not, it has to be put someplace where they all have access to it, or they can’t download it.

I really think you want them downloading it from the LMS, and not trying to access your computer.

With RISE, the file-to-be-downloaded is attached as part of the export and is inside the export folder, similar to any images or videos that are a part of the RISE (IIRC). I find it odd that Storyline wouldn't do this same function.
I see from WaltHamilton (#superhero)'s response that if I put the items as resources, it will package into the STORYLINE, but I find it odd that there's even the capacity pull the downloadable file from my desktop. Maybe the default is to pull from the web, and STORYLINE doesn't differentiate whether it's my C: drive or the web. Just feels like a "falls short" there.
Thank you again Walt for saying it should go in Resources.

All support files for learning modules should be packaged with the module. modules should be self contained and users should never be asked for required to access external links. Mainly because external links can and will break, depending on the location of the user, they may not have access to the link. It adds cognitive load as asking users to go externally breaks the focus. It is becoming common, mainly due to the practice of people putting in directory links in PPT files and excel files, to add external links as the excuse is "Its easier then to update the file". It does not apply to learning content and is never advisable or a good learning experience. The support documents should be relevant and required to aid users to advance in the module. A way around it is to embed the PDF though using the Web Object option. But do not expect anyone to download anything, they wont, they want to complete the course and move on. There are discussions already in the forums on how to do this though. Most of the people wanting this are usually process people and not learning experts and so they often need it explained to them.
