Essay question- trigger on number of characters?

How can I create a trigger to get a graded survey essay question to give X points if the learner types in more than 20 characters in the answer?

A graded question has no points associated with it, you could use javascript to count the number of characters and then use that to add to a score but it wouldn't be the built in score as those variables cannot be adjusted with triggers or javascript.
