Everything we know about Cornerstone on Demand and Storyline!
I thought I would start a thread about Cornerstone on Demand so there's a central place for people to read and add to. There seems to be a dearth of information about how CSOD and Storyline interact with each other as well as the unresolved issues surrounding it. I've spent many hours scouring the web and speaking with Cornerstone trying to find a solution. Hopefully this thread will serve as a resource for others going forward.
On a side note, I love Articulate Storyline. I started with Adobe Captivate with limited success. It was a very steep learning curve, but I was able to get some basic functionality out of it. I tested out Storyline with it's 30 day trial, and I will say that time-to-effectiveness was drastically reduced. It really IS like using powerpoint. Granted there is less complex functionality and interactions available than Captivate, but so far it's given me everything I've needed to use. The benefit is that the learning curve is much less steep too. Think of it as the difference between iMovie and Final Cut Pro. The latter can do some crazy effects, but the former gives you 90% of what you need and can get you comfortable in 1/4 of the time.
It's nice to have a properly-working content creation tool when you're in an LMS like Cornerstone. I have enough trouble in CSOD as it is.
So some of the nuggets of wisdom that I've found are :
- Cornerstone does not track SCORM 1.2 content properly. You cannot pull a lot of the reports if they are not in SCORM 2004 format. You don't have the option to select that course in the reports.
- If you export into SCORM 2004, there will be an extra section on the left with text links to the module. This takes up 30% of the screen, and on smaller laptop screens may crowd out the module window. Cornerstone says this is a Storyline exporting settings issue. I couldn't find any settings that shows/hides that section. The workaround is to resize the module to the screen, which doesn't get rid of the section, but at least fits the module.
- When reporting, you can get the completion status for a course based on quiz result or last slide viewed. You can also get a final grade for course. Storyline passes the results information for each question (including short answer) but you cannot pull a list of the answers for an individual. Therefore, it may not be advisable to administer any testing where you'll need to review individual answers
- You can get a list of aggregate answers for a module. e.g. I can see how 100 employees answered this multiple choice question. This is helpful to determine if learners are absorbing the course information correctly.
- Web objects (such as websites, or links to sharepoint documents) work in modules if your IT has added csod.com to the trusted sites
- Popup windows that open up the articulate module in CSOD will work if you add csod.com to the allowed list for popup blockers. Your IT dept can also add this to everyone's computer. Otherwise when learners click the "launch" button, the module does not show up.
I'll post more as I think or find them, but feel free to add to this list!

We're having an issue launching an HTML5 course in IE11 from CSOD. When one of our users launches the course (with CSOD compatibility mode set to 'None') they see a blank pop-up. Nothing there but a grey screen. However, if we change the compatibility mode to "IE10" then the course launches fine HOWEVER the course then loses focus at the end of each slide (basically, it hides behind other open windows when the timeline reaches the end of a slide).
We've tried playing with publishing settings, played a bunch with the compatibility mode. Nothing seems to address this. Everything works fine in Chrome and if we run from another LMS (like SCORMCloud).
Any ideas or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

We are having the same problem. HTML5 is the required playback. No flash fallback. We can't change the compatibility mode due to networking constraints. I'm surprised that the only options offered on this thread after all these years is to use flash or to change compatibility mode. There are a lot of corporate clients that do not allow flash anymore on CSOD and that want to continue using Storyline.

Hi Chris -
Are any compatibility settings selected in the course properties? IE won't display modern content if IE8, IE9, IE10, etc.. are selected. The other thing you might try is hitting F12 to open the error console. This could provide helpful info on why the content is not running.

Hi Steve, We always set compatibility issues to None as we have had historic problems when using anything else. I'll try F12 and see if it gives me a clue. Thanks

OK, stupid question time. How do I launch F12 on Edge mobile browser as I can't work out how to.

This fixed our issue with our trainings launching in Chrome, but not in Internet Explorer (the primary browser for our company). THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Two ways I can think of to do this. One is by submitting a custom xAPI statement, publishing the output as xAPI, that flags the specific way it was completed. The other is by adding a question that submits an open value in SCORM 2004 that you could search for by answer value. This would involve adding a hidden question and using triggers to set the value, adding it to submit for your results slide. You'd need to adjust the score values for your invisible submission to make sure it doesn't affect the score.
This should give you a way to query by that value in your report.- MaryGutweinCommunity Member
We use Cornerstone as well, and are exploring xAPI statements. We have discovered that the reporting for xAPI in Cornerstone does not exist, except for some clients in a Beta format. They have an xAPI statement viewer that has filters - we've only got that feature turned on in our CSOD Pilot site - but it's rather clunky. We are trying to determine how to export that data into a tool that can manage it more efficiently. Just wanted to share in case you decide to go the xAPI route.

Hi Mary,
Were you able to determine the best way to export the xAPI statement data? I am looking at trying to find a way to use Power BI to visualize and filter the data that comes through xAPI statements because the raw data in the Statement Viewer is clunky and can be overwhelming.

Hi All,
I found a resolution to my problem just before Christmas. I'll try to explain how it was fixed...
The course had some triggered slides in, if a user got a question right it went to slide X..if wrong it went slide Y etc. There were about 12 scenario's in the course like this. Now, if you got a question right, you will never see the slide for the wrong answer and vice-versa.
If there are 12 scenario's like this then there are potentally 12 slides (or more) which will not get seen. Just make sure your completion is set to the correct number of slides to be viewed before it is marked as complete in your LMS.
Hope I explained it ok??!

Chris,
You can't completely remove trainings from CSOD. You can make them inactive or you can reversion. Welcome to the unnecessarily complicated world of cornerstone.

Hi Bud
1. Yes. If you publish in SCORM 2004 AND include a summary page, you can report on the assessment within the training. The report in Cornerstone is a Standard report under training, called the Course Assessment Question Item Analysis.
2. Yes. This is a different setting in Articulate. You would publish with the parameter of slides viewed.
3. Yes - technically. If you have, for example, 20 slides and all of them must be viewed for the course to be "complete" then that information will feed to Cornerstone. The end user will see "complete" or "in progress" in their transcript
4. Yes. When you build the course, create a summary slide that does not show the user their grade. There is a nice "Thank you" slide that I use to indicate that they are done, but it doesn't show the end user their mark. The marks / grades / answers will feed into the report though. Only a person with Admin access would be able to print that report.

Thank you all for the contributions to this thread. We're scheduled to implement Cornerstone On Demand later this year. This gives us a step-up on the potential issues we might encounter.

Hi Jade,
I had a similar issue, but I published in HTML5 but without the mobile player. By using the browser on a mobile device, it all worked fine.

Hi Allan, Can you please clarify your complete LMS publish settings for Storyline 2? I have always published with HTML 5, but for some reason, the CSOD Mobile App will not launch the course properly. Thank you.

Sure can! In CSOD Deep links are located under the Admin Tab>Catalog under General Learning Deep Links. The deep link generator allows users to generate a link to courses, tests, images, pretty much any learning object you have uploaded or created within CSOD. (Search Deep Links in CSOD's help for all of that)
To use that link in your SL courses pull the url from the deep link like so:
Deep link looks like this:
<a href='https://yourorganization.csod.com/DeepLink/ProcessRedirect.aspx?module=launchtraining&lo=3XXXXXXb-cXX9-4XX9-aXX4-fXXXXXXXXXX6' title='Click My Deep Link'>Click My Deep Link</a>
The url is located between the apostrophes (I have bolded this for ease of view). Placing this url anywhere you choose to place a hyperlink or "Jump to URL" trigger in SL2 will take you to this object.
Hi Will,
The secure site is one of the reasons we've documented here in regards to the web object not displaying in the published output. Are you able to upload web objects to a secure site in terms of accessing them?
- WillFindlayCommunity Member
Good suggestion. We are using Brightcove hosted videos. With Brightcove they give you a URL (HTTP rather than HTTPS) where the video displays in the upper left corner of the page. We generally just embed that page as a web object.
I did find these helpful instructions that indicate how to make a Brightcove link HTTPS:
https://support.brightcove.com/en/video-cloud/docs/using-https-url-players-hosted-linkbrightcovecom
However, this only is working for me in Internet Explorer and Firefox. Chrome won't display the video as HTTPS.
So, unless Chrome loosens up a bit, it seems like my only current solution is to see if Cornerstone has the ability to launch online course content as HTTP.

Hi, Will -
We haven't had this particular web object issue, but we've had some inconsistencies with users on how the web object displays. The web object is pointing to a PDF and it blows up so large that it overwhelms the slide and users can't continue. Trouble is, some people have no problem and others do. For a quick fix, I'm abandoning the web object and just using a hyperlink trigger.
Thanks,
Scott
