Have any Storyline Phrases?

Do you have any good Storyline phrases? I've heard "When in doubt, fade in and out!" I've said "I'm a fader-inner, not a popper-upper." I'm looking for phrases similar to these to add to my Storyline Handbook used to train newbies. Thank you!

  • White space is your friend

This is a visual medium. Nothing has to do what you want; it only has to look like it is doing what you want. (ie. You can make an object suddenly appear by hiding it and having it show, or having it show, covering it by something, and having the cover disappear.)

  • Don't tell Storyline to do something it's already programmed to do.

That's not catchy, but it's useful. For example, one of the common mistakes for newbies is to add triggers that change an object to Selected or to Visited when the user clicks the object. Storyline does that automatically for those built-in states. Duplicating the "order" with a trigger can actually cause problems. Question slides have a lot of built-in programming, too. It helps to know what the program will do on its own, so you don't waste time.

Use introverted programming (aka avoid groups).

Turning a group into a button often causes problems and requires special programming.

      • For example, instead of a group containing a rectangle and an icon, use just the rectangle object. While in Edit-States mode, you can insert the appropriate icon directly into the state(s). It will look the same as the group, but it'll only be one object in the Timeline.

Guess what: there's a User Guide.
