I always have this problem when i want to save my data
a screen appears and I can no longer leave storyline for fear of losing my progress

Are you working on a local drive (C:\...\Documents) or using a network location (including a shared site)? I have seen an error similar this when working from a network location. Try working from your local system and see if that resolves the issue.
