Importing XML player has wrong colours

Hi all,

Just want to check that I'm interpreting the way Storyline handles XML files correctly for the player.

The problem: A customised Storyline template was created. The player settings have also been changed and colours customised. The player XML is exported. Importing this XML into another Storyline file that does not reference the created template results in the incorrect colours being applied to the player. In the below screenshot, the left hand player uses the correct colours, the right hand (bright blue) is wrong, but this is the XML player that was exported from the left.

In the XML, where colours are concerned, is it referencing the colours of the applied template? - To frame this a different way: if I select the colour #005461 from the customised template, does the XML just reference the placeholder/container for that colour that when the XML is imported into a different Storyline file that does not have the template, whatever colour is sat in that position (say bright red for example), that's the one it points to?

  • Hi SamBarnard-98a4,

Thanks so much for reaching out! I'm sorry to hear you've run into this snag. Happy to help!

I'm curious, do you experience the same behavior with your background color changing if you recreate importing/exporting in a brand new .story file?

I'd like to test this behavior out on my end. Please share your current XML file in this thread or privately in a support case so we can investigate if this is isolated to this specific file.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

      Hi Luciana,

I can confirm this is what happens. If I use the storyline template file that opens a new untitled storyline project, it's all fine. If I open/copy and then open the storyline file that references the template it's fine.

If I open a new storyline project, with no template chosen (i.e. out of the box, everything is default), and import or open the player XML, that's where the behaviour occurs.

It's not a big issue, as I share the template around and the player settings are correct there, it was just something I encountered when checking it in file that does not have the template applied.

I cannot upload XML files to the forums as per the forum guidelines/restrictions.

        Hi SamBarnard-98a4!

Glad to see Luciana has been helping you! Happy to jump in here!

I tried to replicate the behavior you shared with a sample Storyline project, but was unable to. After setting the Player to custom color code #005461, exporting the XML, and importing it into a new course, the color code remained accurate. Below is a screenshot of the custom Player after the XML file was imported to a blank course.

As Luciana shared, it would be helpful to see a copy of the XML file that's giving you trouble. You can upload that to our team privately, through a support case.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

  • Hello,

I've attempted the same and had some odd results.

    Attempt 01

    • I launched Storyline 360 > New project without a template. Opened the player, changed the colours as I wanted them, exported the XML as Storyline Modern Player - TEST 01.
    • Closed Storyline 360, then launched it again and started a new project without a template.
    • Imported the Storyline Modern Player - TEST 01.xml and it was fine. Colours were as they should.

    Attempt 02

    • Did the same as attempt 01, but this time I named the exported XML file Storyline Modern Player - MP 2024 Brand.
    • Closed Storyline 360, then launched again and started a new project without a template.
    • Imported the Storyline Modern Player - MP 2024 Brand.xml and the background colour was correct, but the accent colour was now wrong.

It seems to me, Storyline does not like my naming convention on the player 😅

I'll look at the support ticket as well, but this just seems interesting and as I said, it's not a big deal since the main Storyline Template that gets shared remains correct regardless in all aspects.

    Thanks for the responses,

    Sam
