Issue with the size of a SCORM file generated

Hello,

I am experiencing an issue with the size of a SCORM file generated using Articulate Storyline.

Despite compressing the videos included in the project, the final SCORM package is currently 820 MB, whereas our LMS only accepts SCORM files smaller than 262 MB.

For your information:

  • The videos were already compressed prior to being imported into Storyline.
  • Storyline’s publishing settings were used with standard compression enabled.
  • The module contains several video-simulation sequences.

Could you please let me know whether there are additional settings in Storyline or during the SCORM export process that could further reduce the file size, or alternatively any best practices or technical solutions compatible with this size constraint?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Kind regards,

Thank you for your response to my request for help!
What I was able to do:

    • slightly compress the videos so as not to lose quality,
    • and when exporting the .story file to a .zip SCORM package, I deselected the adaptive media quality setting during playback in order to have fixed quality.

In this way, I was able to get below the 262 MB limit.

Wishing you a great end of the year.

I'm unaware of any additional settings, but 262MB from your LMS provider seems very restrictive. I assume all images have been 'saved for web'? I suppose you could potentially host the videos elsewhere and link to them?

I guess the only other thing I would do is take a look at the SCORM folder and identify the largest files, (SCORM Content > Assets).

  • Here are some ideas:

    • Contact your LMS to see if they can increase the size of SCORM folders they will accept
    • Try presenting some of your videos as image sequences, or even animated GIFs. Perhaps some video simulation sequences could be presented as a series of images and descriptive texts instead.

Here's another vote for talking to your LMS provider. 262 Mb presumes that you essentially won't have video content, and puts a really low ceiling on audio content.

You could try taking the published MP4 files (located in /story_content) and compressing these using a third party video tool. I can highly recommend the excellent open source HandBrake for this job which you can find here.  Just make sure that the processed files have the same names as SL's output files!

You can try SCORM compressor like Doctor Elearning, directly upload your SCORM and compress.
