One Attempt

We have a course opt out test.  What are the steps to allow learners one attempt only at taking the test.

  • Don't put the Review Quiz or Retry Quiz buttons on the Results slide for the pretest.

Be sure the only option if the users reaches the Failure layer of the pretest Results is to go to the course content.

    • For example, the Next button on the Results slide could have 2 triggers.
      • One trigger would jump to the content, with the condition that the user has a failing score.
      • Another trigger could jump to the "End of Course" slide with the condition that the user has a passing score. (This is optional. Assuming you track via passing the pretest, the successful user could exit from the Results slide.)

    Here's info about conditions: https://community.articulate.com/series/articulate-storyline-360/articles/articulate-storyline-360-user-guide-how-to-work-with-triggers#conditions

  • Hi Phyllis,

Welcome to the E-Learning Heroes community!

Judy provided a great explanation about how to limit users to one attempt. Alternatively, if you at one point want the learner to retake a quiz after failing, you can include the retry quiz button only on the Failure layer when choosing slide features. This will allow learners to retry the quiz if they fail, but not if they pass.

If you'd like assistance with your specific file, I'd be happy to take a closer look! You can upload it here or share it privately in a support case. We'll delete it from our systems once troubleshooting is complete. In the meantime, I wanted to share a few resources that may be helpful:

  • Yes, I removed the retry quiz and  review quiz buttons from the results slide.

We want the learners to take the test one time for certification. However, learners are taking the test multiple times and eventually passing the test.

What can I do to ensure the test can only be taken one time?

As I said above, make sure that the user can only go to the content if they fail the test. In other words, do whatever it takes to prevent them from going back to the question slides. For example, the Results slide shouldn't include the PREV button. And the pretest shouldn't be included in the built-in Menu.

Also, to ensure that they don't exit the course and restart it from scratch, adjust the Player properties so the course will "Always resume" on restart.
