Primer: Storyline-block completions in Rise

Let's say you're planning to put a Storyline block into Rise. Do you want to control when the user can continue after that block? Or do you need to track completion in Rise with that block?

This post looks at using Storyline's Complete course trigger in Storyline blocks.

Determine when the Storyline block is "complete."

What does the user need to do to complete the Storyline block? That determines the "when" for the Complete course trigger. Below are some examples.

  • The user visits a certain slide

  • The user views a video

  • The user clicks all the buttons in an interaction

  • The user passes the quiz in Storyline. Note: Rise sees a Storyline block with a quiz as complete when the user reaches the Results slide. Rise doesn't care if they passed the quiz or not. Therefore, in this situation, put the Complete course trigger on the Success layer of the Results slide.

Publish the Storyline project to Review 360 with tracking via triggers

To insert a Storyline project into Rise, you first have to publish the Storyline project to Review 360.

To ensure tracking via the Complete course trigger in the Storyline project, be sure that only Using triggers (e.g. 'complete course') is selected in the Tracking Options.

Insert the Storyline block into Rise

Insert the Storyline block in the appropriate position in your Rise course.

To ensure the user completes the Storyline block before continuing...

If you want to require the user to complete the Storyline block before continuing the Rise course, do this:

  • Insert a Divider > Continue block.
  • Open that block's content, and select Complete Block Directly Above for the Completion Type.

To track course completion via the SL block...

Sometimes, it makes sense to use a Storyline block to track completion of a Rise course.

For example, perhaps the user doesn't need to view all of the content, because the course branches. In that case, you could have all the branches link to a final lesson that contains a Storyline block with a completion trigger.

When you publish the Rise course for the LMS/LRS, select Track using Storyline block for the Tracking.

  • You can only designate one Storyline block for tracking completion. That is why it must be possible for all users to reach that block, no matter what else they view in the Rise course.
  • If the Rise course includes more than one Storyline block with a completion trigger, be sure you indicate which block to use for tracking completion of the Rise course.
