Publishing to Video and Closed Captioning or Subtitles
I am publishing a series of videos using Storyline 360 and I have been asked to have closed captioning on the videos. I was able to take from my notes section and add captioning to each slide and when I play the slides I can click on the CC icon to view the words, however, when I publish the course as a video the closed captioning does NOT appear on the screen.
How do I publish a complete course as a video and have closed captioning play on the video?
Hi, everyone!
I have some great news to share. We just released another update for Storyline 360. In Update 73, we’ve included important fixes and new features!
One new feature we’ve included:
Boost video accessibility by including closed captions when publishing projects as MP4 video files.
To take advantage of this update, launch the Articulate 360 desktop app on your computer, and click the Update button next to Storyline 360. You'll find our step-by-step instructions here.
Please let me know if you need additional help!
Hi Matt and Signature Learning!
Here' a quick tutorial explaining how display captions by default using a trigger and variable. Here's the link!
Please let me know if you have any questions!

The tutorial makes an assumption that the closed captioning is to be used on embedded videos rather than captioning for the video output of the storyline file itself. This is the same assumption made by PowerPoint support who also show how to add closed captioning for embedded videos in PPT. The thing is, we want our viewers to have closed captioning accessible for the entire story, regardless of output type. We also need to ability to edit the captioning and timing as necessary.

Hum, I tried that and it seems not to work. I am attaching my file. What am I doing wrong? To be honest, I assumed it could not be done, but this should be an added feature when exporting a Storyline file as video.

it would be great if this feature could be added please. Closed captioning really important to have in the video output as that's the only format I can get to work in Adobe Connect so far... unless someone has a workaround?

Hi Katie,
Can you also please notify me when CC is available when publishing a video from Storyline 360? Thank you.
You got it, Glenn. By replying here, you should now be subscribed to any updates we share here.

I would also like to know. I work for an American institution that expects captioning.

Hi Leslie,
I would also like to be kept updated.
To meet regulations here, the closed captioning needs to show for the entire video.
My work around is that I import the Storyline video into Camtasia and then re-add the closed captions there. It is a lot of extra work (since I already did it in Storyline). Plus Storyline cc are much easier to work with, so I would rather just export a video that already includes them.
Thanks

Hi Articulate staff,
I belong to those who have been waiting a long time for a solution as well and I need to know if, or when, I can expect the problem to be fixed. Is the issue a difficult technical problem for your colleagues to fix or has Articulate taken a strategic decision (for some reason) not including closed captions when clients publish for video? Your answer is much appreciated. - ClaireJeffrey-dCommunity Member
Hey,
This thread has been ongoing for two years and wondering if there was any update on how to include close captioning when publishing as a video file.
Is there any update on when this feature can be expected?
Thanks

Hello Claire,
Thanks for following up! We're making a plan to add this feature to Storyline 360, but at the moment, I don't have an exact timeline to give you. As soon as we have more to share, you'll be in the know now that you're subscribed to this thread!

Hi Becca,
Is the issue a difficult technical problem for your colleagues to fix or has Articulate taken a strategic decision (for some reason) not including closed captions when clients publish for video? (The reason I am asking is because it has been an unsolved issue for such a long time and target date can still not be announced.)

Hi Martin,
When publishing for video, closed captions are not included since there are no player elements included.
As Becca mentioned above, this is a feature request that is open with our team. You can see which Articulate 360 features we’re working on next via this link:
Articulate 360 Feature Roadmap
I wanted to share some information about how we manage these feature requests, which may be helpful.

Hi Leslie,
Thanks for responding but I really need to know if Articulate will fix this or not. I have been patient and waiting for years now and I get the feeling that Articulate has no intention fixing it. If it will be fixed, Articulate should by now be able to give a preliminary date. If it won't be fixed, you must be honest and let me know so I can look for an alternative eLearning solution. Sorry for being outspoken about this but it puts me and my clients into trouble.

Hi Martin,
Thank you for the follow-up. As Becca and Leslie mentioned, we're in the planning stages of adding this feature to Storyline 360, so there isn't a preliminary date set.
To set expectation, it's unlikely to be implemented in the next few updates. I'm sorry if that puts you and you clients in a bind, but I did want to share that so that you can make the best decision going forward.
