Screenreader not picking up slide items

Hi,

I hope someone can help! I've been having some materials tested with a screen-reader and where the slide or layers have a text box, an icon (which has alternate text) and a button (which has alternate text), only the icons and buttons are being picked up, and not the text boxes. Everything is listed in the focus order, so in my mind they should be showing up for a screen-reader?

Are there specific screen-readers that are supposed to work with Storyline resources.

Many thanks

  • Most screen readers should work (some better than others), only interactive items will take focus. The text boxes are read using the down arrows, tabbing will move to the focus items.

  • I'm encountering this exact same issue. The screen reader is not picking up the text in the layers despite being listed in the focus order. I'm very versed in using a screen reader so the error is happening on the Storyline side, not with how I'm using the screen reader. :) This is only happening on one slide so its a little strange...

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

It looks good to me are you on latest version of SL? There was an issue in the past where the first item was not read.

The text boxes look like lists, have you thought about adding them as a billeted list in the alt text instead as it will help users to better understand them when using assistive technology.

This may seem odd but try adding a hotspot above them in the focus order, it maybe the bug has resurfaced.

You should only need one set of buttons in the focus order not all of the buttons unless you are preventing the user clicking on the base layer.

  • They're actually buttons. I created an accordion type interaction that required buttons on every layer. Those are actually being picked up just fine. Its the items that I pointed to with an arrow that aren't being picked up at all.

  • The hotspot didn't work. The arrows aren't working at all on this page.

I had to do extra buttons on the focus order because I am preventing the user from clicking on the base layer. I also want to give them the freedom to choose whichever order they would like.

You may need to raise a support case from the focus order they should be playing.

  • This is happening to me as well! I'd searched for someone else having this issue and posted about it and just found this. Sarah, did you find a solution?

    Thanks!

I did not find a solution. I played around with it for awhile and republished a few times and then it started working! Not sure why???!!!

  • Hi Sarah,

I'm glad to hear that you were able to solve this issue! If you run into any trouble moving forward, please let us know.

Hi AShea, and thanks for reaching out!

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing this issue. I see that you’ve reached out to our Support Engineers and are working with my teammate, Ian. You’re in great hands! We’ll continue the conversation in your support case.

For anyone having a similar issue, you can try testing your course in SCORM Cloud to confirm if the course will play correctly. You may want to use a different browser in incognito/private mode, and the most up-to-date version of your screen reader. If you're still seeing this issue, please submit a support case to our support team so we can take a closer look!
