Storyline 360 - Properties Panes - Bug?
Hi All,
I've ran into a rather annoying issue.
Keep in mind that sometimes everything is fine for the first 5 - 10 mins of editing a module.
Storyline dialog boxes / properties panes / whatever you want to call the little windows that pop-up allowing you to edit content will disappear. Once this starts happening the extended options of these panes will linger:
Below the Format Shape pane:
I click the eye dropper and you'll see only the colour selector is visible and the Format Shape pane has vanished (It's still there but cannot be seen):
What should happen once a colour has been eye-dropped the colour selector should disappear and the Format Shape pane should reappear. In this state the Colour Selector cannot be interacted with, BUT! if I click where the Format Shape pane should be, it reappears and the Colour Selector disappears, resuming normal function.
This on it's own isn't too bad, but it's not alone, this can happen pretty much anywhere at anytime. It's particularly bad when using the Edit Text AI tools, they continually disappear without anything going on, I have to play a game of cat and mouse clicking on where the pane should be over and over again to slowly make use of it.
Example GIF:
I've tired reinstalling Storyline 360 to no change in this behaviour.
I'm working on a 50 slide project weighting in at 77MB
Any idea on what's causing this? I'm using a HP ZBook G11 (64GB RAM, RTX 4070) with Windows 10.
I use multiple monitors, sometime just 1080p 16:9 monitors and in the office I plug into an ultrawide screen (which leads onto another issue with the eye dropper itself being miles out of alignment and sometimes not representing the colour it's hovering over, a story for a different forum thread)
Has anyone else had this experience / can provide a little guidance? I'm willing to try anything really.
Thanks all
Hi, JimboJambo!
Since there seems to be multiple issues being discussed here, I've opened a support case on your behalf so our Support Engineers can take a deeper look at what's happening. I've included all of your troubleshooting steps up until this point, so a teammate of mine will be in touch via email with next steps!

- Disappearing panes: Yes, I have had this happen. And yes, it's frustrating. For me it's primarily been the caption window, but I have also had this happen with others randomly.
- What I have done is to close as many other programs as I can. The behavior seems to be more of resources on the system than anything else. This approach has worked over the past couple of weeks, but I've had to shut down SL360 and then restart it, and also reboot once or twice. ("I love technology....")
- For the eyedropper and color selection, you have identified the problem: multiple monitors. One workaround that I use sometimes is to take a screenshot of the color palette, then put it into SnagIt, where I can easily see the hex codes for the colors. I've also built a PPT slide with a series of random shapes and then made each one a respective color (like for a corporate color palette). Then I just toggle back and forth between the other program and SL360.
All of these are functional solutions to getting your project done. If there are any permanent ones that others have, I'd be interested to read them.

Hi Jimbo,
I may not be able to solve all your problems, but I might be able to help you with the color picker issue. Please see this website: Inconsistent Colour Picker | Articulate - Community
If you are using two different monitors, try setting the scaling of both monitors to be identical and see if the Storyline eyedropper cooperates better for you.

There are several threads in this community where others have reported the same issue.

eyedropper-does-not-pick-the-color-it-is-moved-over Hi JimboJambo!
Sorry to hear that editing panels are behaving so erratically when authoring in Storyline!
Since repairing Storyline didn't solve the issue, can you please confirm that you are working with locally-stored .story files? Working directly off of a network or shared drive, may introduce latency issues such as these.
If you are already working locally, can you please try changing the scaling to 100%, if it's not already? We've seen similar cases where these issues pop up on monitors with high-scaling settings.
However, if you're still having trouble after those steps, please connect with our team privately through a support case.
They'd be happy to continue troubleshooting with you!

Hi Steven,
The monitor in question is already at 100% scale, it is part of a dock with another monitor not used by SL that is set to a different scale, would this cause the problem?
The .story file is indeed a local file but I have a related question, does Storyline need to dip into the default user Documents folder at all? Maybe to store some configuration files? As it stands the setup I am using doesn't allow the default Documents Windows 10 folder to be anything other than a network drive. Could this cause the issue? (e.g. Adobe Premiere forces you to store workspace config files within the Documents folder which causes huge issues).
Thank you
