Stuck...Ideas for Dry Content

Hi, I'm working on a very technical financial presentation that contains a lot of lists and tables of attributes, etc.  I've done the click and reveal multiple times and am looking for something different!  Here's an example of one of them.  I don't want to just slap the tables in there, but I'm out of ideas!

Mutual Funds versus Exchange-Traded Funds

Mutual Funds

ETFs

Variety

Wide choice: Active and Passive

Mainly passive/indexes. Active ETFs are launching at an increasing rate.

Taxation

Subject to taxation on dividend and realized capital gains.
May have gains/losses when other investors redeem funds.
May have gains/losses when stocks in index are changed.

Subject to taxation on dividend and realized capital gains.
No gains/losses when other investors redeem funds.
May have gains/losses when stocks in index are changed.

Valuation

NAV, based on actual price of underlying portfolio. Transactions via mutual fund company.

Creations and redemptions at NAV. Transactions via an exchange. Market price may be valued somewhat above or below NAV, but the deviation is typically small due to arbitrage.

Trading

End-of-day.

Continuous.

Management Fee

Depends on fund: Low for index funds. Higher for active funds.

Depends on ETF: Low and, in some cases, even lower than for index mutual funds.
Higher for more active, less liquid underlying portfolios.

Capacity

May soft or hard close to investors at the manager’s discretion

Do not hard or soft close

License Required

  • Can you put the content into context? For example, create mini scenarios and ask which type of fund would meet the client's needs. That lets you present the info in the feedback.

In other words, help them learn how they'll use the info. They need to know "WIIFM" ("what's in it for me?").

  • One device I have used with tablular information in the past is to use a slider with the attributes - variety, taxation, valuation etc. as the values across the slider. Then display the row content on the screen as the slider value changes. This provides a kind of 'look-up' tool. Then taking JudyNollet 's point about helping the learner understand how to use the information, you can ask questions at the bottom of the screen and the learner can use the 'tool' to look up the answer...
