Text variable references instead of empty variable

I'm encountering the same issues as in this post from 2018, but it's Storyline 360 in 2023. https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/text-variable-references-showing-through-when-variable-is-empty

I am recreating functionality in a system. Here's how things should work:

1. Click a button to open a layer.

2. Review the text entry field that has a reference to text in another variable (call it variable x).

3. You edit the text to set a new variable (call it variable y).

4. You either click save to set variable y to a new variable, or you click cancel and close the layer.

The problem I'm encountering is that when variable x is referenced in the text entry field, it appears as %x% in preview mode.

I tried the fix that the original poster suggested (set default for the variable to a space), but that's not working for me.

Nope, not an incorrect name. It's used elsewhere just fine. It's just when it is used in a text entry field that this situation is occurring.

  • Is it set as the initial value? Or as the text that is visable before a value is set? Without seeing the slide itself this is difficult to work out why.

you may need to use a trigger to set the value to a variable

  • Hi Alysha,

I'm happy to chime in! I agree with Phil; it would be helpful to see the Storyline file to understand how the variables and triggers are set up so we can make better recommendations.
