Video created as Storyline output has blank start screen when used in Rise multimedia block
Hi. I've created a video in Storyline 360 from 4 slides. When I embed it in Rise, it shows as a blank screen with start button. It plays as expected but I'd like to get a first frame picture showing rather than the white square. Grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks Math, that will help in the future for getting rid of the Play button! As for the black screen, I just kept doing the Errol and Danielle technique and all of the sudden it started working consistently. I am not questioning it. Just going with the will of the computer gods. Thanks again everyone!

Hello Everyone, I am experiencing the same problem. I have never worked in Rise only Storyline. However, my latest client wants me to use Rise instead of Storyline. When I create the video or interaction in Storyline and insert it in Rise, the first screen is black. I then decided to do the workaround which was have the first slide not have audio and created a trigger to start on a layer and it still did not work. Any help would be appreciated.
Also, is Rise keyboard accessible? I was trying to use the keyboard to view the interactive slides in Rise and videos but I keep getting into a loop. Is there a key that I can use to get out of this loop. I am using the tab key to move forward and the shift + Tab key to move backwards. Those work fine but once I am in a block in Rise I can't seem to move on to the next block.
Hi Wendy! Thanks for reaching out! May we know what Browser and version number you're using where you're having trouble with Rise?
It may also help if you send a copy of your .story project and a copy of your Rise project? You can open up a case here to send us the copies privately.- WendySchweit218Community Member
Hello Renz,
I apologize. I uninstalled the latest version in Rise and then did the work around that I found online. Apparently, if you use audio then you must create a cover slide. The trigger I set up on that slide is to jump to the next slide when timeline starts. It is a little strange that I have to do this but apparently this is a known issue with Rise. Well, at least according to your website. When the August 31 update came out, I updated the software, and this work around works with the latest update too so that is great!
I was also having trouble with getting the video controls to work so what I did was just not even use them and came up with another work around. I have not tried it again since the last update from August 31.
Other than that, everything is working out quite well. I was kind of excited because I created a Crossword puzzle in storyline and uploaded it in Rise. It looks nice. It takes a few seconds to load, but other than that it works perfectly.
Have great day!
Best regards,
Wendy Schweitzer

Hi Wendy! Glad to hear all is working well! It looks like your email signature came through when you replied via email. You can remove that if needed by clicking ‘Edit’ beneath your response. Here’s a quick Peek video if you need help.

Thanks for sharing this information, removing the audio from the first slide has really helped!

Hi, I'm new to Articulate and trying to publish one slide from SL 360 for a Rise 360 course and am having this problem.
I've tried inserting an image of the slide at 0s for 0.5s before the rest of the media on the slide, but this hasn't helped. I'm still getting the black block with a big play button in the middle when I add it in Rise.
Help! :)

OR you can go to the player menu and change the cover photo to slide - Cover slide or a picture as a place holder.

I was dealing with the same issue of the black screen when importing the video in to Rise. I was able to make that go away by exporting just the video rather than the SL as a project. Now I see a thumbnail of the video with a play button that is much more appealing.

I am still experiencing this issue. But this used to work (just a few months back). I have tried all the suggested solutions with removing the trigger, audio, transition, and effects on the first slide. Or using the Player to choose a slide as the thumbnail. I have also tried rolling back the SL version to the previous version. The mp4 file is still exported with a few seconds of black at the beginning, resulting in the black thumbnail in RISE. Any new information about this? We end up having to edit these videos on another programme.

Last year, I also experienced the black screen when importing a SL file into Rise. What I did was add a first slide that looked just like the beginning picture of my video. I used SnipIt and put the Snipit picture in the first slide. Then I added a play button over the picture in the first slide. I added a trigger to say that when the user presses the play button go to the next slide. Now the user sees the first slide in Rise and presses the play button to see the video. I had to do this for all my SL videos.

Hi I have this problem as well - video published from SL360 and put into Rise is black at the start. I've tried all the workarounds shown here and none have worked for me. Any advice?
Hi Laurel,
I'm sorry for the trouble with the video thumbnail. I appreciate your efforts in applying the suggested troubleshooting steps, including the one from Errol above.
If you're comfortable sharing your Storyline file with us, we'd be happy to take a look to investigate further. You can upload it here or privately in a support case. We'll delete it when we're done testing!

First of all im wondering why anyone wants to export Storyline files as video. When i need a video i make it in AfterEffects or Premiere. Storyline for sure not my first choice for that. A authoring tool like Storyline is for creating interactive experiences, at least thats how i see its use. However i can imagine a usecase where you build something in Storyline, and want to reuse it in some promovideo or whatever. But even in that case, i would postprocess it in AfterEffects or Premiere.

Replying just to confirm we are having the same issue. (Just a blank screen with a play button for exported videos). We've been using SL for years and never had this issue in the past.
I've tried all the workarounds above including using a slide thumbnail in Player settings and duplicating the first slide and removing all audio/animation/transitions.
Hopefully one of the lovely folks at Articulate can respond to this thread to share the cause/solution for anyone else who may be experiencing the same thing.
