Videos not playing in published course. HELP!!
I am working on a course with lots of videos. Originally they were really blurry and so I've been having to use the work around I learned here. //www.screenr.com/NTHH
I published the course last week and the work around worked fine. Today I realized that some of the videos were not blurry because of SL, but because of the video themselves. Fixed the videos. Republished. Renamed the video files so I could replace them in the output file. Replaced them just like i did before.
Now when I open the output file (both web and LMS output) the videos do not play. They show up in preview mode, but not in the published version , HELP!!!

So it seems that this is an on-going issues that has yet to be resolved. I am working with Storyline 3 and have the same problem; videos not automatically playing. I have tried every trick and tip mentioned previously and none of them work (moving it one second into the timeline, publishing as Flash with HTML backup, even adding a .25 second automatically moving forward slide BEFORE the video slide...).
WHAT is the issue and what is the resolution for it? And, before I am asked, no, I cannot provide a copy of what I am working on as I work in aviation and this is confidential information/training we are developing for an OEM.
If all fails, like others, I will just have to move into Captivate or PowerPoint.

Thanks - I think the current issue all depends on whether the user has clicked on an interface item in the course at least once after the course launches and before the video is supposed to play. If the user hasn't clicked on anything, the video will not play until they do. This is probably because of Chrome's new rules about not letting media autoplay without user interaction.
There is supposed to be a play button that automatically displays at the beginning of the module that prevents this issue (by giving the user something to click on), but my guess is that it isn't displaying like it should be.
So, my workaround in the meantime is to always include a "begin" button or some other interaction before a video plays, and to never use the "Always resume" option if there is a video in a course.

That's what I was forced to do as well. The bad thing was that I have been building introductory videos for our eLearning, something related to the topic being discussed and to sort of "rev up" the user. But, with the not-auto-playing issue, it sort took the wind out of my sails. As you said, if the user clicked - anywhere - first, or the video had a slide that the user clicked previously to get to, the video worked fine. Or...adding some sort of interaction (play button is most noticeable) worked.
Good luck! One nice thing I have to say is that Articulate was on top of this when I had this issue. No sooner did I submit my issue, they replied, and the following day, the patch was released.

I am experiencing the same issue of videos not playing back in Chrome. Thank you SO much for your work around because nothing else worked. Launching the course in IE removed all animation for the course so that didn't work but adding a button at the very beginning of the course where the user had to click worked like a charm! Thank you Will Findlay!

Sorry not a fix... but same here my perfectly working storyline projects are no longer playing audio or video as of this morning 9:30 am EST . It plays audio and video when I am in Preview but on publishing it does not work at all.
Hi Michelle,
When you said you're opening the web and LMS version and viewing the "preview" mode - I'm not sure what you're describing. The preview option is within a .story file, and if you're testing the audio/video you'll want to publish a file and load it into the intended environment to fully test it. Testing it locally could cause you to encounter local security restrictions, and cause your content to fail.
Namrata,
Since you mentioned no longer being able to play your audio or videos as of a specific time, it seems like a new development that it would first be good to check that you:
- Work on your local drive (your C: drive).Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, includingfile corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
- You should also make sure the directory pathto your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters(for example C:\Articulate).
- Avoid using special characters, accents orsymbols in your file names.
Next, I'd conduct a repair of Storyline to see if the odd behavior is solved.

I believe I have solved the problem. It was the encoding of the M4. I got a different avi to MP4 encoder and whatever program it used is more friendly to Storyline. So, I reconverted my files and followed the workaround again. It works.
Hi Michelle,
Thanks for the update, and I'm glad you were able to update your file and then use it within Storyline.

Michelle, I am having this issue with MP4's are you saying you converted them to AVI's and it worked? What's strange is my videos play in preview and when I publish some will play and others won't but then if I republish and play it different ones will work then the first time I published. It's not consistent. Let me know if converting them worked for you. Or if anyone else has some ideas I'd love to fix this issue!
Hi Annette,
Thanks for chiming in! This discussion is older, so I'd like to start fresh.
- What version of Storyline are you using?
- What format are you using to publish your file--web, LMS, or something else?
- Where are you hosting the published output for testing?

Hi Alyssa,
I’m using Storyline 3, I have tried publishing out to web and LMS. On Web I viewed from desktop and with LMS viewed from our LMS. Both reacted the same way. Any input would be greatly appreciated! I’ve tried reloading the videos and that still didn’t solve the problem. I’m thinking it has to be a publishing issue since they all work in the Articulate preview. Thanks,
Annette
Thanks, Annette. Mind if I take a closer look at your file? You can attach it to this thread, or click here to send it to me privately. I'll be standing by!

Hi. We are having a similar-ish problem here. We have courses (written in SL2) with 5 videos embedded which have been running for almost a year with no problems. As of recently the videos have suddenly stopped playing. We haven't updated the courses in anyway and the videos still play ok in articulate preview. We can't see how to solve the issue!
