What's the difference between the triggers "When timeline starts on THIS SLIDE" and "When timeline starts on OBJECT?"
If I want to change the state of a button based on a variable being adjusted, is it better to use one or the other? Does it matter?
It does matter which trigger option you use. Remember, an object's timeline may start (aka "become visible") some time into the slide's timeline.

If you want to change state based on a variable being adjusted, you can use the "When Variable Changes" trigger, if the button and the variable change are on the same slide.
If you want to change state based on the variable having been adjusted (like on a different slide), then timeline of the slide is your best option.
