Accessible Learning in Rise

Mar 19, 2024

Hello,

I built a course in Rise for our Travel Security Team and they reminded about a key point, that I cannot believe I did not consider when builder; accessibility for our visually impaired employees.

I searched past discussions and nothing to recent that provides insight.  I did see a post about 4 years ago where the Articulate team mentioned this is something they are working on (should be a top priority in my opinion).  I did find an Articulate resource, "6 best practices for designing accessible eLearning" and will be looking into that for inspiration.

Does anyone have any suggestions or examples they could share about how they made their Rise course more accessible for the visually impaired.  I would greatly appreciate any guidance, thank you.

Hi Dianne!

Thanks for contacting us with your question. I'm glad to hear that you're working toward making your Rise 360 courses more accessible.

The article, Rise 360: How to Design an Accessible Course, shares some great tips on creating accessible content. In addition, we keep a complete list of accessible components in this article, Rise 360: Choosing Accessible Components to Create Online Learning.

Dianne, the most common accessibility improvements is increasing the font size of the menu system and cover page in Rise. This is something you don't have control over in Rise and is fixed after exporting your course. See before/after of a sample course menu. Some parts of the Rise UI require customization to meet accessibility requirements like this.

Hi Phil,

Great idea, did not even think about the menu/cover page.  I met with my SMEs today to review the course.  They were very pleased with the course, just some minor changes.  I will definitely add this to the list of changes however.

Thanks for your suggestion Phil, very helpful.

Have a great day!
