Images blurred in interactions and presenter

Feb 05, 2013

I know this has been covered, but I just need a confirmation whether a certain amount of blur is expected when using images in Articulate Presenter or Engage?

I am using all the tips from http://www.articulate.com/blog/how-to-get-perfect-screenshots-in-presenter-09/ for getting perfect screenshots.  I re-sized my images back to the original dimensions so there is no scaling.  I am choosing images that fit into or smaller than what's allowed according to the doc: http://community.articulate.com/downloads/p/773.aspx

I am also producing at either CD-ROM delivery or JPEG factor of 100%, yet my images are still coming out blurry.  I do software demos, so there is a lot of small text on my screenshots.  They are very hard to read compared to the original image.  It always seems to lose about 10 - 20% quality compared to the original image.

Is this just they way it is or am I missing any other setting?

I attached an image to compare both the original and the produced image.  You'll need to view the image at 100%.  Is there any way to get sharper images after producing something in Articulate studio, if I am already using the known recommended settings?

Hi Vimal,

I apologize, but I don't think I'm seeing the issue in the screenshot you attached. Maybe my eyes aren't as sharp as yours The first image is the one that you see in the finished product, correct? What area appears blurry to you? I do see where some of the markers show through the border of the pop-up, but it looks like that may be the transparency around it. Some of the confusion may also be due to the image being a screenshot of the program.

Do you have an image file you can attach here, so I can take a look? I can try to insert it into an interaction and see if I can provide any suggestions to improve the quality.

Thanks!

Thanks for looking at this.

All my images are screenshots of a program, since I do software demos  When I look at the original image/screenshot in any image viewer, it looks exactly like the original software.  When I use the same image in Engage or Presenter, it becomes blurry after I produce it.

I took a screenshot of a typical Excel ribbon and used it in an Engage interaction.   I then took a screenshot of the Engage interaction as I see it and placed it right next to each other so you can clearly see the original image versus the the image when used in a produced Engage interaction.  The top half is the engage interaction and the bottom half is the original PNG.  Download the image named ppt blur.png and view the image at 100% magnification.  This is important so you can see exactly what I see.

Nothing special about the screenshot.  I used Windows Prnt Screen, Jing, Snagit, etc. and saved image as a high quality PNG.

Hi Vimal,

Thanks again for the image. I'm afraid I really can't see that much of a difference between the two screenshots. I've had pretty good experiences with PNG images in Engage and Presenter, but then again maybe my eyes aren't as good as yours I can see a very minor difference, if I stare long enough, but not one that I think would be noticeable from a user.

You're more than welcome to share your project with our technical department to see if they can provide some additional suggestions for the quality.

Thanks Vimal and good luck on the project!

Some of my learners pointed out the blurry images, saying it gives them a headache.  Until then I too didn't think they would notice, which prompted me to investigate.  Most people can't tell the difference between standard definition television and High Def TV.  To my eyes, there is a huge difference because I do a lot of video work and always notice little flaws in images and videos.  I look for that stuff.

No need to send the Engage project file, as I think your response answered my original question: SOME image degradation is expected compared to the original images when used in Articulate - or Camtasia, or pretty much any other software.

Thanks.

Vimal
