Menu Turns White with a big Red X

Dec 27, 2018

This is happening in both Engage and Quizmaker.  When I insert an image the main menu above the ribbon bar turns white and has red x across it (partially hidden by the ribbon.  Any ideas are appreciated.Missing Menu Bar

Hi, Cliff. So sorry you see that red x.

I echo Phil: When a red x appears, that typically means that available resources are low. Clearing the temp files may help resolve this issue; however, please err on the side of caution there. If you're comfortable with deleting those files to make more room, here's how:

  1. Open Windows Explorer, type %temp% in the address field, and press Enter.
  2. When your temp directory opens, hold Ctrl+A to select all the temp files and then press the Delete key on your keyboard.
  3. A few temp files may currently be in use so they won't get deleted. When prompted, please skip those.
  4. Try to insert an image into the project file again.

Hope that helps – keep us posted on your local hard drive's status! 🤞

Hi again, Cliff. Looks like we posted at the same time and were on the same wavelength!

Appreciate you going through the cleanup. I hope you don't mind, but I've opened a case with our Support Engineers on your behalf, so we can sort why the red x still appears after going through that process. They're rockstars at finding the cause of such behavior!

Hello Fahd and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)

I took a look at the case that Cliff worked on with our support engineers and was able to track down the underlying issue that he was running into:

Windows 10 update version 1809 (OS Build 17763.253) causing an issue with Engage 13, Quizmaker 13, and SL1.

I see that you are using Storyline 1, but can you confirm that you are using that Windows version as well?

Hi Team,

I received following mail from your Technical Team :

Unfortunately, even if you are able to update your Windows 10 to version 1809 (OS Build 17763.253) by upgrading some hardware in your laptop, this will still not affect Storyline 1 - the application will still exhibit this behavior based on the ticket that we have submitted with our software engineers.

Storyline 1 was first released back on August 8, 2012 and has received ten major build updates up until September 15, 2015. From a technical standpoint:

 1. Storyline 1 was not built to support Windows 10. Windows 10 uses modern software features that weren't available during Storyline 1's development stage.

2. We no longer support Storyline 1. Our priority is delivering a continuous stream of new features and content to Articulate 360 while supporting the two latest major versions of our perpetual desktop apps, Storyline 2, 3 and Studio 13.

Taking all these into consideration, the only feasible option is to rollback to an earlier version of Windows 10 (build 1803) or downgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 - both of which are officially supported by Storyline 1.  As far as Storyline is concerned, have you considered upgrading to Storyline 3 or even 360?

I got the OS on my Laptop reinstalled. That has resolved the issue for the time being.

Regards,

Fahd
