Linking to word document on the internet

Jun 26, 2012

Is it possible to link to a word document on the internet from a Quizmaker slide?

I tried to set up a link on a slide (the one containing the introduction, not a question)

When I click on the link it just "flickers". It doesn't open the document.

Thanks for the file, Suzan! I published the file and it didn't work for me, either. However, after taking a closer look, I noticed the hyperlink is currently "handouts/EssayQuestionsCommandWords.htm". This isn't a valid URL for a document, it looks like it's linking to an internal or local document. Is the file you're linking to hosted on a web server, or is it a local document?

Thanks!

Good morning Suzan,

I have published the course to Articulate Online and it's working perfectly for me. Have a look

Keep in mind that it won't function properly while previewing, and possibly while viewing the published version, locally. Make sure you're uploading the course to the environment for which it's intended. If you view published Storyline content on your local hard drive, you'll encounter security restrictions from the computer, web browser, Flash Player, and network that'll cause various features of your content to fail. To properly test your published content and share it with others, upload it to the environment for which it was published. Please review this article for details.

If you've checked all of the information above and it still doesn't work for you, please let me know exactly what happens when you try to view the linked document.
Thanks!

Suzan,

If you're publishing to web, it must be uploaded to the web server you plan on using, in order for the link to function. The link will not work if you publish to the web and then view it locally.

For example, if you publish for the web and then just use the prompt "View Quiz" it will not function.

The same goes with viewing the content from the folder. This will result in exactly what you're experiencing. You'll be able to see the page, but clicking on the link will result in no action.

Have you taken a look at the article I mentioned, earlier?

Here it is: http://www.articulate.com/support/kb_article.php?product=st1&id=d3k1rz8nu2xu

If you have uploaded the content to the server, can you share the URL for the published quiz?

Hi Suzan and Christine,

I was able to open the link without any problems, using Suzan's file "Essay-Questions.quiz" file that she provided with the full URL. So, perhaps, Suzan, there's some sort of firewall setting on your computer?

When in Preview mode, I did--as expected--get the "Link is not active while previewing." But when I opted to Publish to Web, I was able to open the attachment in another window. Was also able to open attachment from the xaverian link provided above.

Hi Suzan,

Thanks for the link. I tried it out and had no problems in Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. The quiz loads and when I click on the link, it opens the document that's linked. Can you try viewing that link (http://intranet.xaverian.ac.uk/private/quizzes/Essay-Questions-Quiz1/Quiz.aspx) in a different browser and see if it makes a difference?

Good morning Suzan,

Thanks for the update. It may have something to do with security restrictions in Internet Explorer, if it's functioning properly in other browsers. Would you mind submitting a support case with our tech team? You'll be able to include your .quiz file on the second page of the case report. They'll be able to take a closer look at what's happening. You might want to mention this thread, so they can see what steps you've already taken to troubleshoot the issue. Also, if you do open the case, please share the case number with me, so I can follow the progress.

Thanks again, Suzan!
