Accessing the player history without the built in buttons

Is there anyway to access the "forward" and "back" in the storyline player without having the player's native buttons present?

More specifically, I mean the behaviour that a browser exhibits when you go forward and back through history.

Please let me know (even if the solution involves accessing the player object in javascript).
