Adding text boxes in 1 slide by clicking

Mar 27, 2020

Hi everybody

I'm new to Storyline 360, but I already love using it!

I have a question though: is it possible to show a slide with one textbox and then add another (2 for example) every time the user clicks next (so when clicking next they won't go to the next slide till they added 2 more textboxes)? I tried to do this with changing the state of the textbox from hidden to normal and then on to the next slide from the moment when both boxes were in the normal-state (showing on the slide), but it won't work. I'd rather not use different slides for this, 'cause I like to keep the project as compact as possible. But maybe this feature is not possible? I don't know.

I'd love to learn! Thanks in advance for helping me!

Hi Sofie,

Happy to jump in and help!

An idea that came to mind is to use a custom button instead of the next button. Since the next button will want to jump to the next slide, a custom button will allow you to apply this type of functionality. I created a sample file for you to review, and I also created a brief video that will walk through the file here

Please let us know if you have any questions!

Sofie,

I think this does what you are asking. You may have had trouble working with states in the the conditions because all the built-in states (including Hidden,) are just like most of us; they think they are normal. Don't change the order of the triggers, or it won't work.

As to your thought that you want to keep your project as compact as possible, here are some thoughts - just for what they are worth.

Your learners can't tell the difference. I could have written this sample to use 4 slides, and it would look exactly the same (and taken less time.)

If you are worried about the size of space your project takes up in storage, what matters is the objects. So whether you have three text boxes on one slide, or one text box on three slides, the size difference is negligible. In fact, reading some posts here, it is not only insignificant, project size is non-intuitive, and unpredictable. If you personally fell more at ease seeing fewer slides in the story view, by all means, keep your project as compact as possible. Just one word of caution. Many people fall prey to slide clutter when they use fewer slides.

Super! Thank you so much for your excellent individual support! I was on the right way. I'm surprised as how many triggers are needed for this feature. If I think about PowerPoint, there's this simple animation where you show things when you click, and only move on to the next slide when everything is shown. I guess it's more comples with Articulate! I added a trigger so that the user can only go to the next slide via Button 1 (and made the default next-button hidden). It works as a charm! Thanks so much for helping me. I will definitely use this info again when I get stuck. :)

Thanks for your help and your story to show me how to build this. As I said to Vincent: I really had this idea there was a very simple way of doing this. Aparrently there is, and it's different slides, like you say! Good to know. It's a good excercise for a dummy like me though to play with triggers and references. I love to learn! Thanks so much for the effort you put into this! Again, definitely gonna use this!
