Animation Effects Storyline Entrance/Exits and States
Jun 02, 2012
On my TO Do list, Jeanette's 7 easy ways to emphasize text:

Very nice, thanks Jeanette!
Decided to try all in SL. Aside from the fact that there are few animations available (and of course no annotations), these pretty much worked.
Entrance and Exits: PPT vs. Storyline
My question: the two in the story I've uploaded have entrance AND exit animations. In PowerPoint/Presenter, you can control/delay the entrance and exits (Animation Pane, click item in list. For example, I might choose the exit to be after previous, duration 1.00, delay, 2.00.
Is there any equivalent in Storyline? I believe the speed settings are equivalent to the durations in PPT, albeit with less granular control. But I don't see any delay settings.
Workaround
The only way I could think of to work around this (to gain more control) was to create a duplicate of the object and position both at the exact same location. So if you look at the 2nd slide (Pointing Hand 2 Objects Entrance/Exit)
1. The first hand object flies in
2. The duplicate hand object flies out, but I stretched it along on the time line so it stays onscreen longer
3. the "fly in hand" stays on the screen for a bit while the "fly out hand is there, but fades out "fast" to make it as unnoticeable as possible
Is there a better way to do this?
Animations for Character States
When a character's state changes, e.g., from happy to sad, I'd like the transition to be more subtle than what I"m currently getting. When I get into "Edit state" mode, it appears I CAN apply an animation (a fade for example), and it appears that it "takes." But in fact it doesn't take. There is no animation when I preview. Is there a way to get this to work? Or should this be a feature request?

Im working on the same thing, also seems to be less effects than in powerpoint right?
Im trying to zoom in a character to make him appear in the slide simulating a camera traveling movement but im limited to use the Grow effect, and i cant seem to fine the way to control the length of the animation effect, before i was able to use seconds as a time reference, here we have the timeline but affects the time that the object stays on the screen, but not the animation timing.
Any idea?
Not sure that I can answer specifics, however, I believe that more sophisticated animations are in the pipeline.
Storyline is not PowerPoint, and whilst we all know and love the .ppt/.pptx animations, they are not the "primary" value from Storyline, so until some more animations come on board we have to find alternative ways to do things.

I liked your jungle animation Bruce, it was a nice way to simulate movement.
Ricardo if you right click the object in the timeline you get a bit more control over the animation speed, I think this needs to be more granular but it is a start.
I have also heard Brian say they are working on some "awsomee" animations. I just hope this is not a rehash of ppt animations.
Would love to be able to flip objects in 3D
Agreed, would allow for a nice card flipping effect.
Thanks
Utilising built-in SL effacts, but having the start and end-points off-screen allows for some interesting effects.

I am experimenting with Hype and Storyline, it gives me motion paths in Storyline but only in a html5 browser it interesting though
Thank you guys, im a flash animator trying to emulate what i usually do in flash, here with articulate. I have created this 2 sec animation without text or audio but it will illustrate what im trying to do i hope. I will try also to have an animated gif and see if i can, for example, move it from left to right while playing the animation in the gif, if that work then i can animate a person walking in flash, then move it in articulate, and it will, hopefully look as if is walking.
Here is the link:

If you can imagine this with audio and better timing you may see what im trying to achieve, sorry for the poor quality.
Yes you can move an animated gif, I did it during the beta
Oh Cool! Thanks! this is looking promising, especially since at my office im the only one who use flash, so this may be a way to level things up a little! :D
Hi All,
TX for comments here. So, regarding my original question, is there a way to get those animations to actually take for character's in Storyline? Here's my post from 6/2. I've inserted the word photographic below for more clarity. TIA
Animations for Character States
When a [photographic] character's state changes, e.g., from happy to sad, I'd like the transition to be more subtle than what I"m currently getting. When I get into "Edit state" mode, it appears I CAN apply an animation (a fade for example), and it appears that it "takes." But in fact it doesn't take. There is no animation when I preview. Is there a way to get this to work? Or should this be a feature request?
Hi, Rebecca -
No way currently to establish transitions between states of the same object. The only way to get this to work is by using a "crossfade" between two separate objects. Fade in on the incoming, Fade out in the outgoing. Play with the overlap.
Hey, Steve,
Bummer. Thanks for confirming and for work-around suggestion. Is this worth a feature request, or is states/animations not something that would even be considered?
BTW, watch for a tweet in a couple hours re my purchase of you Storyline for Starters (http://amzn.to/KAu2WK)
You could do this using the layer transition fade but it will start to get messy. If you save out the characters as images you may be able to transtion them using animations, i have done fades in states during the beta
I think any feature request is worth submitting. This one would be really helpful to have. It's probably possible (and not a technical stretch) to have a state to state in / out transition in all outputs.
Done! Thanks again
