I have used an exit shrink animation in the past with a duplicated object appearing along the motion path at the point it disappears, but this is really fiddly and can take a while to get exactly right.
It's very easy to do in PowerPoint, and then export as a video to use in SL. I would do the shrinking in PPt, then do the movement in SL, which would give you a lot more flexibility for when and where the movement occurs.
