Another great Storyline User Group meeting!

Jul 26, 2013

We hosted our 3rd Storyline User Group meeting this past week.  This time we tackled variables and ideas on ending a course.

We tore apart and recreated a couple of variable examples.  The first was an easy example of the simple calculator that adds/subtracts 1, 5, or 10.  The second example involved using variables to track scene completion and use states to 'show' that completion from a menu slide as the learner goes through the course.

The course ending ideas we built included ending a course:  with a graded quiz; with an 'acknowledgement' button; or with just an 'exit' button.

Great meeting!  Does anyone else have periodic user meetings?

Brenda - that sounds great!    Would it be possible to share your examples 1)  using variables to track scene completion and use states to 'show' that completion from a menu slide as the learner goes through the course and 2)  ending a course: with a graded quiz; with an 'acknowledgement' button.  Those are two things I am in the process of trying to tackle on my own.

I would be very interested in a user group - I'm in Houston, how do I find out if something is available in my area?

Is there a forum or list of StoryLine User Groups?  I'm in Tri-Valley California (kind of close of Silicon Valley). I'd be interested in attending.

Hi PJ!

So there are only a couple user groups right now. Austin, TX has a couple groups, Brenda has one in North Dakota and some users have tried to kickstart one here in Phoenix.

Articulate doesn't manage or sponsor the user groups so they're entirely user managed. You're more than welcome to start a user group in your area. You can also use our forums to rally support for your group. We're also happy to provide suggestions for topics and share some freebies to help you get started.

Hey Brenda! So cool to hear you're keeping those meetups going. If you ever need anything for one of your meetings (content, source files, ideas) please don't hesitate to ask!

Thanks David!  I REALLY enjoy these meetings and they seem to be beneficial for everyone who attends.  I will definitely keep your offer in mind--that could be super helpful!  Thanks!

Hi Karen-

Yep, I think I can post those files.  I'll try to get them posted ASAP!  Thanks for the interest--our Storyline User Group is growing...we started with 3 of us and it has now grown to 16!  Not everyone can attend each meeting, but we usually have a good showing and anticipate needing a larger room soon!  It's very beneficial and I would highly recommend it.  Since I work for a government department, it was fairly easy for us to find other Storyline users with state government.  It may be more difficult in the 'outside' world, but soooo worth it!  Maybe you could use Linked In or a local paper to discover some other users?  Or network at a conference with a big 'help wanted'  tshirt or something--that would be fun!

Would love any info to help get one started in Houston.  I'll start putting feelers out to see if I can drum up some interest.  Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated!!

Once you get some 'takers', try to get a feel for where they are in the Storyline learning curve.  A lot of our members were just getting started, so we covered the basic storyline building blocks (slides, layers, triggers, and states) first, then moved on to inserting objects, shapes, images, etc and adding some simple triggers to them as well as trying out buttons, markers, etc.  If they're more advanced, you can jump to variables or more complex trigger actions. Our goal eventually is to get others involved in the 'sharing' part...there's no better way to learn than to teach!  We'd also like to have some time for brainstorming course ideas and helping each other out with specific courses.

David Anderson said he would also be happy to suggest ideas and provide resources...he's awesome, so feel free to contact him, too!

Good luck!

Brenda your user group sounds amazing, just the kind of thing I could use to push my thinking/storyline use a bit further but I'm in the UK (up Birmingham way for any locals). This might not be the right place to post about it but I wonder if anyone's considered doing some webinars/online chats/online meetings type things for the storyline community? I know we have a lot of screenr's but sometimes it's nice to discuss an idea in real time. Any thoughts? Do these already exist and I just haven't stumbled upon them yet?

Hi, I'm also in the UK (Lincoln) and would also love to know if there are any plans to hold webinars/chats/meetings.  It would be great to chat with other users to share ideas examples of work.

@Marty if you are still subscribed to this thread--Dallas has a user group. We're trying to find a meeting place in the middle, but so far many of the members are from North Dallas/Plano. We'll be meeting in Plano on Feb 4, 5-7pm. Please join us! For more info & to be added to the contact list, email ntexaug [at] gmail.
