assigning points to questions in storyline

Jan 13, 2014

Hello all Heroes and fellow Storyliners,

I’m building a quiz within my Storyline course that has a total of 8 questions. The default point value for the questions (10) only gives me an 87.5% for a perfect score. In order to have the total equal 100%, I changed the point values to 13 for four questions and 12 for the other four ((13*4) + (12*4) = 100), but when previewing the quiz scene it doesn’t seem to be updating the points. Any advice?

Thanks!

Margaret

Hi Margaret,

It sounds like some odd behavior happening in your Storyline file, as the percentage score received is based on the total points. So if you have an 8 question quiz, which are worth 10 points each, you'd receive 80 points and a score of 100%. If you got two of them wrong, you'd have a score of 64 points and 80% percent.

I followed your set up, and everything up dated, and as an example attached is my .story file where I've reverted them back to 10 points each.

If your file is behaving oddly, I'd suggest checking into the following things which are known to cause odd behavior:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive).Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, includingfile corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory pathto your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters(for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents orsymbols in your file names.
  • You can try importing your Storyline project into a new file to see if that resolves any issues.

If you're able to replicate this behavior in a new Storyline file that you have worked on from your local drive, are you able to share that with me?

Hi Ashley,

Thanks for your help! You're right, my file was acting oddly to not have a perfect score =100%. I was attributing it to not having the right point total, but that was irrelavent.

After going through your checklist (yes to working on local, no long file names, did not use special charaters) I ended up importing my Storyline project into a new file. However, it took a little more elbow grease than I expected:

First, I just imported the whole project into a new story project. Still got the same odd behavior.

Next, I imported just the quiz scene into a new story project. Still saw the same odd behavior.

Finally, I ended up re-typing the questions in a new story file (thankfully there were only 8) making sure that worked as expected, then imported those slides into my existing story project and added the proper slide layouts and links. Only then did I see a perfect score of 100%.

Seems like a lot to do but I'm just happy that worked!

Thanks again!

Margaret
