Audio close sync with software simulation videos and searchable text in transcript

Apr 24, 2015

Hi Everyone,

We have a few questions about application-simulation based modules in Storyline. The modules will include software simulations (demonstrations) that need to be closely synched with audio narration. They will also include interactive and non-interactive content pages (non-simulation pages), again synched with audio narration. The modules will need to be available in different languages.

Here are our questions, based on the above description:

  1. If we record the software simulations in Storyline and include them as videos, how closely can the audio narration be synched to animations/actions in the video?
  2. Is there any way to include closed captioning (i.e. synched transcript text that closely matches the audio and on-screen animations/actions)?
  3. Is there a way to make the transcript text searchable by the users?
  4. Will Storyline support keyword based searching (e.g. through tagging pages, or by some other way?) and list any matching results from within an entire module?
  5. Given the above description, is there a recommended maximum file size beyond which a module may become less responsive?

Thank you for your help.

Hi Mayuresh,

1. If you record the audio and video actions at the same time, and insert it as video on a single slide they'll be synced up automatically. If you need to insert them as step by step interactions, I'd suggest conduct the audio recording while watching a version of the step by step slides.

2. Storyline does not have a closed captioning feature, although there are a number of users who have created similar methods here. Or you could also refer to this older article on how to set it up.

3. If you include transcript text as a part of the  notes field, the notes are searchable as a part of the menu search functionality. You could also include the text on the slides or layers, as that will be searched as well.

4. The only search option we have is the one mentioned above in regards to using the player/menu search element.

5. There isn't a maximum file size for Storyline in terms of the .story file or the published output, but you will want to consider your hosting platform and the internet bandwidth of your users.

Please let us know if you need anything else and good luck with your project!
