Button states not working correctly

Hi,
I have a main menu.
If I select an option and complete all the option, I then set a variable (Option1) to TRUE (default is FALSE).
When I return to the main menu I want the menu item 1 to be greyed out to indicate it has been completed, not just visited.
On the main menu screen I setup a state change for the menu item 1 button to change from normal to completed (custom state showing greyed out item), if variable option1 is TRUE.
Pretty simple but it does not work. The built in states work eg VISITED, but not my custom COMPLETED state.
I displayed the variable Option1 value on the menu screen to ensure that this was changed to TRUE (which it was after I completed option 1), so I know it is not a problem with the setting of the Option1 value.
HELP! I need these menu greyouts urgently.

Update to the above.
I added a variable initialisation step and this resolved the problem. ie even though my Option 1 variable was by default FALSE, when I inserted an additional trigger by setting Option1 to FALSE at the start of the timeline, for some reason this fixed the problem.
I now have greyouts! PHEW!
