Can I make objects move across the screen?

Oct 30, 2013

I know I can animate objects to "fly in," "fade in" and so forth... and I can have a "mouse" pointer come in to click on something... but what about an object moving from one spot to the next, such as a car traveling down a map, or a hand waving back and forth... is that possible in Storyline?

Just looking for more creative "tricks" to add to my presentation. Thanks!

Hi Chrisanna,

Yes, if you'd like to see motion paths, please add your voice. Many of us have made that request.

Also, though, you can make things appear to move from one spot to another by using masking or by positioning items along the timeline. I've attached a story that has 3 examples.

The first uses a rectangle to mask the character who's popping into the frame

The second positions arrows incrementally along a timeline and has them animating in from right to left

The third shows a motion path, created in PowerPoint, saved as a video file, and brought into SL.

If you have any questions about these, please do shout out.

Hi Everyone,

I need some help I want the two circles when they come together to move in a more smoother way and was wondering if you have any suggestion and also what else I could do to make the slide look more professional

Hi Saira,

I just amended one of the circles to be filed with a different colour, right-clicked and set to 35% transparency, and deleted the "oval".

You may need to explain about the overlap/intersection, but graphically it looks fine.

Hope that helps.

Hi Saira and Bruce,

I was intrigued by this and played around with it. Thought I might as well upload what I came up with. See slide 1.2. I:

  • hid the "eat" oval
  • lengthened the "1st state" oval for the entire length of the slide
  • moved "oval 1" to fade in slow at 3.25 seconds (when the 1st state and food ovals merge)
  • changed the fly in animation speed to very slow
  • Centered all the ovals on the slide, and the word or
  • Repositioned the words "women" and "female"

Shout out with any questions.

Nicely done Rebecca.  Thanks

hi everyone! I am a little new to Storyline-- I am working on a course and I have the main menu page set as a cubical office space. I want to add fun personalized customization so I though by having them pick certains objects to place in  their cubical ( picture frames, a radio, calendar...) it would be fun! however I do I make this possible--meaning how can I have them "set up their cubical " and have it stay like that throughout the course? thoughts?

Hi Melissa,

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

I love the idea :) Personally, I would probably keep everything (if possible) on one slide. Initiate the course with the drag-and-drop slide and allow learners to customize their space. When they're done, you could have them click a button (either a player button or custom button on the slide), then include your additional course content using layers.

If you use layers, you can show content over their work space. So, not only are you retaining the customization they've chosen, you can also now include new content in that space. If you need to show more, just use more layers.

This is just my personal opinion though - I'm a big fan of layering :D

Here's some resources that may help:

Best of luck with the project!
