Most of the time I can resize my stage to view more of the content in the timeline, but occasionally the resize grabber won't appear at the line between stage and timeline. I can hide and show the timeline but I can't resize the stage. Also occasionally the play and stop controls on the timeline will grey out and not matter what I try I can't get them to activate. Fortunately the space bar will start and stop the play head.
Any ideas why this happens, or rather what to do about it, would be appreciated.

It is very infrequent, and I think I’ve found a work around. I have to jump back up several slides, 4 or 5 maybe, to get it to reset. This seems to work. I was just browsing to see if anyone else had found a work around…

Any resolution to this? I'm experiencing this myself as of today. REsized the timeline to show more layers...now I can't seem to go back. Interestingly enough, I undocked the Timeline | States | and then the Notes. THEN, I brought them back and am able to resize them again. :-)
It sounds like you've expanded the timeline and can't move the endpoint to the previous spot. It sounds like you can't drag the endpoint at all. Is that correct?
Do you mind if we take a look at your project to get a better idea of what the fix is? You can either attach the .story file to this discussion or upload it privately in a support case.

Sometimes a quick fix to this is to preview the slide. When returned to the stage/timeline I find I can now resize the stage...most of the time.
I am experiencing the same issue. I can't get the timeline area back to a smaller size once I have made it bigger.
