See attached file with revised slide 1.3. You also needed to change the triggers on the the slide's baselayer so that they chnage the state of the buttons to completed When the Variable xyz changes. Hope that's what yoy wanted.
Sorry, I forgot that part. When timeline starts doesn't work because the timeline has started before you go to the layers.
Another (maybe simpler) option is to have the close button on the layer directly change the state when it is clicked. Then you don't need conditions or variables unless you use them for something else.

The conditions on the triggers on the buttons that close the layers are the problem.
"Set completed1 to True
When the user clicks
If completed1 is equal to True"
The condition only sets completed to True if it already is True. Take out the conditions, and everything should work.
Thanks for responding Walt. I removed that condition on the first one but it does not show complete when I click on the X button?
