Well, You have one sort of set up correctly. SM. I changed your trigger to set the variable to True when the timeline "Starts" and upon return to the menu slide your code for SM worked fine and displayed the checkmark state.
Try adding the remaining triggers to set the other variables on the last slide of the other scenes and you should be ok. Just follow what you did with Social Media as a guide and set the variable to change when the timeline starts. The student can't advance until the next button is on anyway, so it should be fine.
If you still have issues, just holler, but it looks like you were on the right track.
