Circular buttons with icons?

Mar 09, 2020

Hello!

I'm a fan of the built in icons that can be added to buttons within Storyline. However, there are only 3 shapes of buttons that can be used and I find myself wanting to create buttons in the shape of circles from time to time, but it doesn't seem to be possible? I understand that I can create a circle shape and make it function like a button, but for some reason icons can't be added to shapes.  Any ideas?

I found a similar question 7 years ago with no responses:

Hi Jesse,

You can create your own buttons by using a circular shape and then inserting an appropriate icon in the middle and you will be able to resize to whatever size you wish.

If you use this technique, the best way to set up your button is to place the circular shape on top of the icon, give it a 100% transparent fill and then increase the weight of the outline (as shown below). If you don't do this and set your trigger to activate when you click on the circle, you will lose the ability to select it when you pass over the icon.

In the image below, the blue buttons were created using the Insert Button option and you can see that you reach a point where your button is no longer circular. However, with the green buttons, that were created with an oval shape, you can increase the size to whatever you want:

Hope this helps.
