Will closed captioning work if I add audio to a layer? After testing, it seems the audio has to be on the base layer for the closed captioning to work. Is this true?
I'm using the built in caption editor and typing the captions. I've tested it and they don't appear if the audio file is on a layer not the base layer. I didn't know if there was a trick to get it to work or if they don't work on layers.
I'm very late to the party here, but I just had the same question and found this thread. From what I can see after watching your video, that only works if the base layer has audio. If the base layer doesn't have audio, then the cc button doesn't appear for layers, even if they have audio. At this stage I think I'll just move my layers to new slides and mock it up to make them look like layers.
Just thought it was worth replying in case others have a similar issue in future :-)
You can add audio to the layers and have cc work like it does on the base layer. Open the slide layer properties and select "Pause timeline of base layer."

Thanks for the update, Debbie. That was actually how I had my slides set up initially, but it didn't work for me. Thinking about it some more, this was a course that was originally created in Storyline 2 and upgraded to 360. Maybe that had something to do with it.
Anyway, I'll keep your advice in mind moving forward. Cheers.
Another method I found to trigger CC to work on slides where there is no audio on the base timeline is to create a short audio recording on the main timeline. When recorded, click the audio file to edit and put silence in. Now there is still no audible audio on base layer, but it makes the CC control available for other layers which do.

Hi Debbie,
Are you using the built-in caption editor in Storyline 360? If so, check out this short video demo of how the closed captions should work on a slide layer.
I hope that's helpful!

Hi Debbie!
Did you have a chance to take a peek at the video I recorded for you? The captions should work on layers.
If you could attach your file here, I'll take a look and help you nail down why you're having this trouble.
I viewed it now, thank you. I will try it. Will the quick video be available for awhile so I can send it to my team and watch it again when I try it?
Absolutely! It's not going anywhere. Feel free to bookmark it and refer to it again in the future. 😊
Thanks you!
