From your description, it sounds like you want to add an object to a slide (like an image), then designate that image as a placeholder to replace with other images in the future. Am I off base?
So as is often the case, cart before the horse, we developed a lot of slides during a project that I now want to turn into templates and master slide elements for future courses. I have found that the only thing I can do is take the slide content paste it into a master slide to use it as a guide and then recreate the slide using placeholder content. Just making sure this is the case.

It would be nice to take any text box and turn it into a placeholder text box in other words.
Thanks for clarifying, Curtis! You're right--this isn't currently a feature, but I can see how it would be helpful. I'll pass along the idea for you!
