Converting courses from Presenter to Storyline

Sep 24, 2012

Hello everyone,

How easy is it to convert material from an Articulate Studio course to Storyline?

I've been developing material in Presenter for a couple of months now and have some good material, but I'm unhappy with how the material interacts with my LMS (Desire2Learn).  I have a hypothesis that the material developed in Storyline might be more stable and predictable.  And besides it really seems like Storyline is the right direction to move into.

Can anyone share their experiences with making the transition?

I am finding that sometimes the tracking works and sometimes it doesn't.  When it doesn't work, the learners cannot proceed with the eLearning and get frustrated.  I just cannot figure out why sometimes the SCORM object is passed  to the LMS and other times it is not.

I'm using SCORM 1.2, as requested by the LMS.

I'd either turn on debugging in the course to see if things are being passed correctly to the LMS.

The LMS may also have this.  Some do.

I'd also get a free account at the SCORM Cloud and test the course out there.  The results will tell you if the course is working properly for SCORM 1.2.

If it is, I'd be inclined to look then at the LMS.

BTW, what LMS do you have?  If perchance it's Saba, there's a couple of things you need to do with SCORM 1.2 content.

Thanks for the tips Gerry,

I am using Desire2Learn.  Do you know much about it?

I set the debugging flag and found out some interesting things.  In one case, the reporting worked properly and the data was passed to the LMS.  In another case, the data wasn't passed, but the output files were near identical.  (Identical except for the time elements.)  See the attached files.

Not sure.  After years of doing AICC, I'm still learning SCORM-speak.

The good news is that it looks like the content and LMS are communicating.  Love seeing things like error = 0.  Means there was no error in the communication.

This part in the second file has me scratching my head.  The "undefined" with the string result of || has me wondering . . .

105:Mon Sep 24 14:55:19 EDT 2012 - SCORM_GrabAPI, returning
106:Mon Sep 24 14:55:19 EDT 2012 - Call LMSGetValue
107:Mon Sep 24 14:55:19 EDT 2012 - strResult=||undefined
108:Mon Sep 24 14:55:19 EDT 2012 - intSCORMError=0
109:Mon Sep 24 14:55:19 EDT 2012 - Returning ||undefined

The other thing I'd look at is the "suspend" status and how the LMS handles.

We used to use Saba and it handles a "suspend" state differently than a lot of LMS's.

On your first question: to convert a project from Studio to Storyline involves simply importing the PowerPoint slide you used in Studio into Storyline.  It will automatically pull in the slides, any audio, and even the Engage and Quizmaker inserts you used.  However, it will totally jack with your color schemes (particluarly gradients) and any 3D shapes you used.  Overall, though, I've been very pleased with the simple conversion process.

Sorry to bump up such an old thread, I'm needing to do a similar task. I am new to Articulate and have been given 10 lengthy courses built using Articulate Presenter - they are pretty awful and from what I can see, a lot of the slides are a direct conversion from PowerPoint with the very slow text fly in animations which are totally unsuitable for reading on screen without any audio support. There are also Articulate quizzes inserted throughout the module, which I'm guessing were built with either Engage or Quizmaker. They have the big Presenter menu/wrapper with the notes tab, audio controls and the nav buttons, but the Quiz interactions also have their own nav buttons [!!!] & you can click either.

My question is, is the solution above what I need to do? Is Studio the same thing as Presenter? I'm trying to wrap my head around what the conversion will do, will I still be able to edit the Engage interactions? And how do I do that? Will I still have the Engage interactions as separate files?

I am also contemplating 'fixing' the current modules - how do I get rid of the annoying slow animations of sections of text and have all of the text come in at once?

I am also thinking about rebuilding the whole thing from scratch. The timeframes are tight though.

I will get the handover of the files tomorrow; I am not sure what I am expecting, I guess it will be along the lines of a bunch of PowerPoint slides, the separate Engage/Quiz files and the Presenter file.

Thanks heaps in advance for you help/suggestions!

Hi Jackie,

Storyline allows you to leverage existing content that was developed in PowerPoint / Articulate Presenter. To learn how to import presentations into Storyline, click here.

If a presentation has Articulate resources, such as audio or video, the PPTA file must be in the same folder as the PowerPoint file, and they must have the same file name. However, Presenter does not need to be installed to import content into Storyline. Currently, Storyline doesn't support importing from Studio 13, so they'll need to be files from Studio 09 (which would include Presenter, Engage, Quizmaker, etc.)

There are a few other elements that won't be brought over in the import as Travis mentioned about items like colors, you'll also experience that with items such as player templates, playlists, and here is a general list of items to consider when importing Powerpoint files in Storyline.

Hi Jon,

Storyline 2, 3 and 360 all support importing content from Studio '13 (Storyline 3 and 360 would support importing Studio 360 content as well)

The issue is importing from newer versions such as Studio '13 into older versions like Storyline 1 - which is the same between Storyline versions as they are not backwards compatible.

Hope that helps!
