There is no debug mode, You could try adding references on the offending slides or create a lightbox slide with all your references on and add it to a tab
Phil's suggestion is a good idea, we would normally add the references to the individual slides so you can see them change as you progress. We also use the variable Use Count feature from the variables screen that shows you where and how your variables are used so you can see if there is anything happening that your don't expect - it can be quicker to track down problems that way if you have a large course and lots of variables.
