While working on a course the other day, the Notes tab disappeared and I was only left with Timeline and States tabs. I spent a bit of time clicking around, opening and closing, restarting, etc. After about an hour, it reappeared. I don't know why. I looked at the updates and saw there was one to deal with wonkiness which I just installed. However, my Timeline has now disappeared. What am I missing???

It sounds like you either minimized it or undocked the panel. You may want to take a look at the tutorial here for working with the panels.
