Documenting Storyline Configurations

Jun 13, 2013

As we all know, Storyline has a huge number of configurable features (e.g., triggers, variables, questions, results, web objects, JavaScript) which is great from a development perspective but complicates management of stories.

It is very tedious to review each slide, examining the objects (triggers, question settings, etc) to see if they are configured correctly. For example, I have resorted to using 'off-page' quiz reports to summarize the correct answers for each question rather than manually opening each question to confirm the setting.

It would be great if there were a story-level report that could be generated that detailed the configuration of the story (e.g., player and menu configuration) and each slide. I have never seen reference to this functionality so I'm assuming it does not exist (I would be happy to be proven wrong).

Is this something that would be useful to others? I'm in an industry that requires very detailed documentation so this may not be useful to teams in non-regulated industries.

Hi Jay! We do not have a list of our internal variables/codes. You are welcome to share your thoughts with our product development team here.

We have a very helpful and creative community though, so if you are needing assistance with something, even if we cannot support it, I'm sure you can find someone that could chime in to help you.

Along the same line, we're looking for a way to document the Storyline configurations used for different project types. It's impractical to say "just open a file up and see what it's settings are." We're hoping for a list, maybe a spreadsheet, of the all the important, relevant SL settings where a particular configuration can be documented and recreated elsewhere. Seems something like this must exist at bigger developers that need to document and manage lots of projects, but I haven't found mention of anything like it. Help!

Hi there, Barry!

Thank you for this valuable context. It really helps us understand the need, and I documented your request for a way to export and print triggers, variables, and more in Storyline.

In the meantime, I found this crafty tip on how to export variables to a PDF from a fellow community member that could help.

Appreciate your voice, and we'll let you know if we add this feature in a future update!

Hello Barry,

I wanted to pop in and let you know that we released an update to Storyline 360 today, which included a trigger panel and workflow update to make it faster and more intuitive.

I know it's not an answer to your specific feature request. Still, many of the details that we've gathered around the need for printing the trigger panel are specific to:

  • viewing and troubleshooting a long list of triggers
  • understanding all the triggers tied to a particular action or event.

With the new triggers panel, you'll be able to:

  • Inline edit - No need to open the trigger wizard
  • Group view - Organize by an event to make it easier to find, edit, and debug.
  • Disable Individual Triggers - No need to delete during your troubleshooting.
  • Collapse and Expand - The ability to focus on specific triggers.

You can read all about this new trigger workflow as well as check out a video right here.
