Gathering information from student from within Course

Feb 15, 2015

Hello! I have searched all over discussions and other valuable resources to find the solution to my question. The question is this: Can I have the student/user taking the course I have made and have them fill in information that they would provide (EX: First and Last, Name, email, and about 6 different participation verification questions), and then use that throughout the course?

What I need is to be able to provide a verification process that will allow the student/user to answer the questions and supply a one to two word answer. That information would then be asked throughout the course to verify that the same person is taking the course from when it began. I was told that this was possible when I got the software (Storyline 2).  The name would also be used to go on the printable certificate that the student/user will be able to print out after the completion of the course.

Is there anyone that can help are point me in the right direction to learn how this is done?

Thanks for your help!!

Hi Jess

Yes you can.  If you go up to the Insert tab, under Interactive Objects there's a Data Entry option.

I'm using Storyline 1, but in this version there are two options - Text or Numeric.  You can add these to the project just like any other object.

Whatever text the user enters in to these objects when the course is running, is saved as a Variable (TextEntry, TextEntry1....or you can rename it).  If you want to display the text entered, just reference the variable in a text box, using the % symbol e.g. %TextEntry%.

The one thing I don't know about is how to do a drop-down menu - maybe that's there in Storyline 2?  Or I'm just blind :)

I've attached an example .story project showing it in action.

Hello Jess,

Glenns information about using date entry and reference for variable should work fo ryou. As far as having a name printed on a certificate, Articulate apps don't currently support certificates of completion. You would need to set that up through your LMS. If you are not using a LMS, you can look at the information here.
