Heading Navigation

Feb 12, 2021

I am brand new to Articulate Storyline.  I am trying to build an accessible E-Learning.  I have assigned my Headings using the Styles, but when I go to preview the slide, I cannot navigate to the Heading, and it does not show up in the NVDA elements list.  I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

Hi Sara, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes! ⭐️

Thanks for stopping by and sharing what you're experiencing — You've come to the right place for help!

While text that is labeled as a header can have alt text, screen readers announce headings using their assigned tags like H1, H2, and so on. We don’t recommend adjusting the alt text for accessibility purposes since learners rely on these tags to navigate headers.

In short, changing the alt text for headings can make it difficult for screen reader users to understand the order of the slide content.

I hope this helps!

I think you misunderstood my question.  I am not using alt text.  I am assigning the text as a Heading, but once I preview- it is not navigable, and does not appear on the elements list.  Also NVDA announces List with one Item, Clickable. But it is not assigned as a List Item and does not navigate as a Heading.

Hi Sara,

Thanks for following up and sharing those additional details! Becca brought up the alt-text as a possible reason why the heading wasn't appearing on the elements list.

Since you don't have any alt-text for your header, I'd like to have our team take a closer look and see why this is happening for you. Can you share your .story file with our support team?

They'll do some testing and get back to you with next steps!
