When you zoom in, the image takes up the full length and width of the presented content, so it makes sense that the zoom window would remain in the same proportions. Consider what it would look like if you were able to change the proportions: A stretched image or perhaps anything not in the zoomed in area would be blacked out?

That is not possible, at least currently. The zoom size is the same proportion as whatever the screen size was you set for the course.
