IE6 and IE7 Compatibility

Jun 06, 2013

I'm sorry if this is covered elsewhere.

Looking at the technical specs, it looks like the e-Learning should work on IE6 and IE7 if Flash 10 is installed.

Initial testing when uploading to Moodle when published to include HTML5 content showed that it didn't work properly in IE6 and IE7 but later IE browsers, Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari were fine.

Before we do further testing, please can you just confirm that it should work with IE6/7?

Thanks

Nikki

Hi Nikki and welcome to heroes,

IE6, IE7 & IE8 are hardly compatible with the HTML5 spec. Anything you get out of these three browser versions is probably due to a stroke of good fortune.

That said, you could install "Chrome Frame" on those browsers and that would solve most (if not all) of your html5 problems in IE.

Hope this helps,
Alex

P.S.: Always remember that HTML5 is still essentially a draft spec - anything can still happen to it.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

I'm sorry if I'm just being overly confused here but on the Articulate site it says:

"Users will see the Flash version of your content if their browser supports it." and for viewing content, the technical specs suggest IE6 and IE7 will work (provided Flash 10 or higher is installed):

Flash Flash Player 10 or later (http://www.adobe.com/go/getflash), and one of the following browsers:

  • Windows: Internet Explorer 6 and later, Firefox 1.x and later, Safari 3 and later, Google Chrome, Opera 9.5 and later
  • Mac: Safari 3 and later, Firefox 1.x and later, Google Chrome
  • Linux: Firefox 1.x and later

And elsewhere I have seen the following explanation of how it works:

  • story.html – This file launches your project. It does all the work: it is the default player and identifies the user’s browser in order to determine which version of the project will play – the Flash version, the HTML5 version or, if you elected to include it, the Articulate Mobile Player App for iOS.
  • story_html5.html – The user will be directed to this file if the user does not have Flash, but does have a browser that supports HTML5. HTML5 is a backup option for devices that don’t use Flash.
  • story_unsupported.html – This file will launch if the user does not have a browser that supports HTML5, but has made it to the HTML5 version of the course – specifically, this file is geared for IE browsers below v9. This file provides an error message with a link to click on that then launches the user back to story.html (to successfully play the Flash version).

Therefore from the above, I gathered that if I were to go into the e-Learning using IE6, then the e-Learning would just play via Flash and there shouldn't be any issue with it tracking normally on the LMS. Am I misunderstanding?

Thanks for your time.

Hi Nikki,

I'm not sure whether this will apply to you or not but I work in a corporate environment where the Internet Explorer installation on our machines has had a customised build applied to it by our Head Office IT. This causes many problems which are not seen on a basic IE install of exactly the same version on a machine not supplied by our Head Office.

Could this be the issue for you? We get around it by using Firefox or Chrome instead.

Hi all,

Thanks very much for your comments and suggestions. I'm going to take these back to the tech guys and hopefully they will investigate further and find a solution. I just wanted to be sure that I hadn't misunderstood the principle in terms of what should work and what shouldn't.

If I learn anything useful (if/when) we resolve the issue, I'll be sure to report back.

I am also encountering an issue.  When I play a published tutorial on a machine loaded with IE8, it plays no problem.  On a machine with IE7, it only appears to load the tutorial, it never actually plays it. The Flash is currently 10.1.  I am assuming there must be a browser setting I need to check/uncheck.  Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Faith
