Illustrated Characters: Standing w/Phone

Hi there, I really need several of my illustrated characters to be STANDING and talking on the phone. How can I do that?

Also, how can I recreate just the desk they sit behind so it is an empty desk that I can recolor/resize?

I guess I just need more flexibility with the characters
