I'm a brand new Articulate Storyline user (when I say brand new- this is only my second attempt at anything- I'm in a class where we are learning to use it). Somehow I've made it so I my insert button is inactive - the whole thing is greyed out). What did I do wrong?

You have to have an active slide to insert something onto. Double-click the slide in the middle of the Story view.

Erin is correct, you will need to be in Slide View. Your image indicates that you are in StoryView.
